Turn and toss a book

Hi,

What is the action of turning and tossing a book on the mantle?
What is a mantle? Is it flat and rectangular? Is it narrow or wide?

He placed the key back inside the pages of the book, and then turned and tossed the book on the mantle above the fireplace.
