Tumbling over the barrels?

I am reading 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott chapter 46.

Jo found herself in that part of the city ...as if waiting for someone, examining engineering instruments in one window and samples of wool in another, with most unfeminine interest, tumbling over barrels, being half-smothered by descending bales.

Would you please tell me what the bold part means?

Did Jo tumble over the barrels? But Jo is 25 years old.

Thanks ??

Jamal 1315 Would you please tell me what the bold part means? It looks literal to me, but I agree with you. I think it is just an unfortunate lapse by Alcott.
