Tub/pool

My local hot tub wallah is trying to sell a summertime hot tub as a pool for the whole family. This doesn't quite seem right, but I can't put my finger on what the difference is.

[/nq] There's nothing wrong with it as long as the wallah isn't calling the hot tub a "swimming pool". A pool, after all, is just a bunch of water collected in one place, but it is bigger than a puddle and deeper.

By the definitions in the RHUD, "pool" in this context sort of implies a swimming pool. If the hot tub isn't big enough to do laps in, or at least a little dog paddling, it's not a pool.

What about those kiddie pools, that you lie in with a beer, but can't swim in?

Your hot tub wallah is simply out of date. Canadian and American vendors have for about 20 years called these things spas.
