Tryout

Can I use try out for trying a dress or something out like asking a mall salesman to try a dress out to check whether it's fit or not in a trial room.

Can I try out this dress? (Try on) is ok but need to know the usage of and difference between tryouts and try out.

If you try out something, you use it for a limited time to see if you wish to acquire it. This is not normal with clothes, which you normally try on in a changing room to see if they are the right size and if you like how they look on you.
