Trying to improve my grammar skills; getting confused between using past and present tense in writing.

Hello,

I wish to improve my grammar skills and as a result of it, is being more self-conscious in how I write sentences. One of the issues I have in writing is using present and past tense. From what I have gathered, a paragraph should be written in one consistent verd tense; for example, if I write the first sentence of a paragraph in present tense form, the rest of the sentences in the paragraph should also be written in present tense.

Below is a sentence-both written in present and past tense- that I would like to know is correct.

For present tense, would it be written as "I am not satisifed with my current grammar skills and because, I have decided to work on it."

The thing that is bothering me is the present tense of 'have decided.' I am not sure if the word phrase is considered correct.

For past tense, would it be "I was not satisifed with my current grammar skills and because, I had decided to work on it."

For the past tense sentence, would it be okay to use "I decided to work on it" instead? Thanks.

Thanks, Micawber. I cannot believe I have forgotten to complete my sentence; I have forgotten to finish the "because.." part.

Thanks for the help. I see what my mistakes are. I use the word "It" instead of "them." Can you explain the placement of the comma before "and" to me? Is it because the comma is used on a grammatical connjuctions that lead to an independent clause?

Yes, " , and " separates independent clauses. A comma after short adverbs is unnecessary, especially when it slows the sentence flow with too many commas.

the first one is present tense and how come used "have decided" but not just decided like the 2nd sentence. -- You'll have to ask the original composer, but either is possible. Present perfect sounds more reasonable to me; presumably the speaker wishes to indicate the recency of the decision.
