Try to/try and

I see numerous people - including journalists in high profile newspapers - who use the phrase "try and" as opposed to "try to" which is what I believe to be correct. Can you really write try and do something (in the meaning you are trying to do something)? It just doesn't seem right to use and unless you are doing two things at once (i.e reading and writing). What is the difference?
