Try doing/to do sth

Hi,

What's the difference between "try doing" and "try to do" sth? I encountered the following example in my book and the correct answer is "try seeing".
You should try seeing a hypnotherapist. It really helped me give up smoking.

Why is it so? What happens if we say "try to see"?
