Without all the context it is impossible for me to say. I would guess that the subject isn't playing very well in the period being discussed. He/she is having a bad patch (when somebody plays below their usual standard for a period of time).

OK, in which it has nothing to do with not playing well. It is a game of chess, and through is just a preposition. Try playing all the moves, so that you will learn.
