trusting relationship vs trusted relationship

Is there any difference between trusting relationship and trusted relationship?

He built a trusting/trusted relationship with her.

Which would be the better usage?

For me, "trusting relationship" is a familiar combination of words and sounds fine. "trusted relationship" doesn't sound right

Perhaps I'm being too literal, but a relationship doesn't have the power to trust, so "trusting relationship" sounds a bit off to me. Too literal? Yes, that's probably it. After all, there are "walking sticks" that don't walk.
