Trust to + something

Can someone please tell me when we use 'to trust + something' and when we use 'to trust+to+something' please?

I have seen:-

He trust his instincts.

He trusts to his instincts.

She trusted to her hearing.

I trust my secretary.

Is there a rule for when we put in the preposition?

Thank you.
