Trouble

Which is correct? Or are these both correct, but the meanings are a bit different?

1: He had a lot of trouble.
2: He had a lot of troubles.

1. In trying to do one thing in particular, he encountered difficulty. You need context for this to work. You need to know what he was trying to do. With the bridge closed for repairs, he had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get to Joan's house.

2. There were many things that made his life difficult. He lost his job.

They're both correct. It is idiomatic to follow the singular form with an -ing construction describing the one difficulty.
