triggered is more often used in a context like this.

eg Mary has asthma. She takes medicine every day to keep it under control.

Yesterday, she went scuba-diving. This experience triggered her asthma. She started to have trouble breathing , so she had to go to the hospital.


Your example would be OK if the child already had a fear of spiders, just as Mary already
