tried to take / lift ...walk

Can I say,

Yesterday was a rainy day. John fell down and hurt his knee.

(a) John tried to walk but failed. Luckily, he saw two scouts was on the way to him.

(b) Peter tried to take / lift John walk to the clinic. Luckily, they saw two scouts holding / taking / carrying umbrellas to him in the rain.

(c) Peter tried to help John walk slowly. They saw two scouts coming to them. They quickly held John to walk.

I thought "carrying" means they took the umbrella and not opened yet.

But, what I mean here is the scouts were opening the umbrella and coming to them.
How do I say?

The scouts were _________ an umbrella walking towards them.

If you use carry you don't specify whether it was opened or not.
But it certainly sounds like you'd already opened it.
