Tried to help him, but...

Can I say,

Peter fell into the river suddenly. John shouted and tried to help him, but he could not pull Peter up. Luckily , a man came to the river and jumped into the river to save him. (how do I correct them? Repetation! )

I take it that you don't want to repeat "river". In that case, say Luckiily, a man came by and jumped in to save him. CJ

Luckily, a young man heard some sounds from the river. So he came to the river and saw Peter drowning. He jumped into the river and saved Peter up to thr riverbank.

It's all OK except the end.

He jumped into the river and hauled Peter up to the river bank.
