Tried ringing her or tried to ring her

Hi all,

I have a little question that really puzzles me. Which one is acceptable. If both are so, what is the difference?

- I tried ringing her early morning but I could not get through.
- Or, I tried to ring her early morning but I could not get through.

Thanks

(It should be "early this morning, but ..." or "early in the morning, but ...", however!)
