Tricky Pronoun

The paragraph below is from Ruth Benedict’s Chrysanthemum and The Sword.

In that paragraph, there are 4 ITs.

I want to know what the ITs stand for respectively.

I have answers on my own, but I’m not 100% sure about them.

Especially I’m not sure about 3rd it.

Can you help me find them?

Conventions of war which Western nations had come to accept as facts of human nature obviously did not exist for the Japanese. It made the war in the Pacific more than a series of landings on island beaches, more than an unsurpassed problem of logistics. It made it a major problem in the nature of the enemy. We had to understand their behavior in order to cope with it.

1st it = Conventions of war which Western nations had come to accept as facts of human nature obviously did not exist

2nd it = 1st it

3rd it = war in the Pacific (I’m not sure)

4th it = the problem

There certainly is a plethora of 'it's, isn't there? It makes it hard to wade through, but here are my opinions about it: 1st it = I agree 2nd it = I agree 3rd it = I agree 4th it = the war
