Tricky bits of english grammer - any help please, its urgent

For some of these there is no good reason, hence the 'Because!' below. But I don't know which ones. Any help will be very welcome.

1. Why is it we say "bigger" and not "more big", but we say "more difficult"?

answer: Adjectives of one syllable form the comparative by adding -er. For adjectives with two syllables ending in -y, we change the "y" to "i" and add - er. For adjectives of two or more syllables we use more + adjective. Elementary.

2. Why do we say "succeed in doing something"?
Because!

3. ...and "risk losing money" rather than "risk to lose money" ?
4. Why not "I will go to Milan tomorrow"?
5. Why don't we say "During I was at work..."?
6. Why do we say "an umbrella" but "a university"?
Because we pronounce ‘universtiy' as if it had a ‘y' in front of it ie. yu-niversity. It is not only the letter which follows the a/an which matters, it is the sound. Modified in this way the sentence flows better.
7. Why is the pronunciation of "come" and "home" different?
8. Why does "beginning" have two "n"s and "listening" only one?
9. Why do we say "I have to work overtime tomorrow" and not "I must work overtime"...?
10. Why do we use "some" in the question "Would you like some wine"?
11. Why do we use a past tense in "It's time we left"?

-- Some verbs simply take different forms after them. I'm afraid you have to simply learn which ones. Another one is "look forward to." Use the -ing form after that.

4. Why not "I will go to Milan tomorrow"? -- You can say this.

5. Why don't we say "During I
