With at in his way, only "looked" works. It describes the situation.

Looking at it his way, the situation ... sets up an ungrammatical construction: the situaton is not the the thing that is looking.

A way around that is to say "If you look at it his way..." or "Looking at it his way, I don't find the situation to be so deperate" or "
