tribute Vs homage?

What is the difference between tribute and homage?

As I guess, tribute means pay respect to someone after his death, whereas homage is to pay respect to someone.

Am I right?

As far as I know, both have the same meaning, tribute is not limited to after death events. It seems that homage implies a public sense, when you respect or honour someone or something in public.

'Tribute', with its roots in taxation, has to do with an expression of the good qualities of the recipient, and has nothing intrinsically to do with the feelings of the person offering the tribute.

'Homage', deriving from 'respect' and 'loyalty' to a man, is an expression arising from reverence or respect of the person being paid homage.
