Trials short-circuited

What does it mean when they say that "a trial has been short-circuited"?

The context is that of two inmates that get exectuted without undergoing trial. So I guess the meaning is clear, but can you give me an equivalent phrase? Maybe "The trial was killed/they killed the trial"?
