treating as categories?

Hi,
I happen to come across a brochure by School for International Training and on the back of its brochure, I came across the following wording:

It is the policy of World Learning to provide equal employment and educational opportunities for all persons regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, age, disability or handicap, veterans status, ancestry or place of birth.

My question is, "Why no articles for xome nouns?" I think the answre could be that they are to be considered categories. The problem for me that it came after a long period of contemplation and it made sense that they are to be thought of as categories but I am not sure all the readers of that words might agree to my judgment. If I think them as categories and can reasonally see readers think it as categories, then should I comfortably not concern with English articles?
