Traveling/travelling

Hi,

We usually double the final consonant when it's preceded by a vowel like the followings:

travel>>travelling(traveling)

model>>modelling(modeling)

I wonder if the forms in parenthesis are also possible!

I'd warmly appreciate any help.

Regards,

Iman

Hi sbolton,

Thank you for your time, but is that just the common form in U.S?

Not only are they possible, in the US, many verbs ending with "el" are spelled with one "L", i.e. "traveling", "labeling" and "modeling" etc...

It very well could be common elsewhere as well, but I think it is primarily in North America. I am fairly sure the double-l spelling is more common in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. I am not sure which is used in Austrailia or other English-speaking countries, but I would expect it would be the British form.
