[travel on a bus for 3 stops] or [take a bus for 3 stops]

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) I got on this bus and went three stops. (friends' answer: correct)

(2) I travelled on this bus for three stops. (friends' answer: wrong)

(3) I took this bus for three stops. (friends' answer: wrong)

The answers above were given by some of my non-native English speaking friends. They said you could relate "for" only to a time reference but not to "objects like bus stops." My other friends disagreed and said all the sentences were correct. What is your opinion? Thank you very much.
