I think that an example of a "traumatic experience" is something that you have been hearing about this month: the sinking of the ship Titanic in 1912.
Can you imagine how horrible it must have been for the passengers? I read about one survivor who could never forget the cries of the people in the ocean who were drowning. That survivor was traumatized for life.
