trash - an American term, not used much here

garbage - all the stuff I throw out. But, now that the city has a recycling program,

Again, these vary by region.



rubbish - I think of this as a British term for garbage



refuse - I think of this as a formal term for garbage, often used in reference to garbage in public places.



There's also the question of what to call the receptacle all this is placed in.
