Trappings

Hello everyone,

I cannot make sense of the sentence "the trappings of modern life".

I think it has to do with the shortcomings of life, but I'm not quite sure.

Could you please help me figure it out?

Thanks in advance!

discov0lante I think it has to do with the shortcomings of life, but I'm not quite sure. No, it is the things that you have or wear that make you look powerful, cool, and important to others. The trappings of modern life = a fancy SUV, the latest iPhone, the latest fashion in shoes and clothes, a MacMansion in the suburbs, and so on.

So wrong I was!

Based on what you wrote, then, "trappings of modern life" is to flaunt all these fancy things and objects you mentioned.

Thank you for your answer!

Not necessarily to flaunt them, but just to possess them.
