Transport vs transportation

Please clarify the distinction between "Transport" and "Transporation" while used as nouns.

Speaking from the perspective of American English, i would say that as a noun, 'transportation' is used much more frequently than 'transport'. Transport is most often a verb.

You would say: The hotel provided transportation to and from the meeting.
But most people would not say The hotel provided transport...

In the military, you have troop

Transport on its own is correct for both uses,

Transportation is an americanism, made up to sound more self-important.
