translation question

My friend asked me to help her translate the following sentences. It is from one of her male friends writing to her.

Yes, thinks could have been different – sometimes in life paths cross in a way that makes you think of what could be in an exciting and melancholic way at the same time.

First I think there is a typing error like "thinks" should be "things".

Secondly, why did the guy say "things could have been different"?

Thirdly, is there a missing word "you" before "cross"? Or if paths is the subject of the sentence?

Finally, "what could be in an exciting and melancholic way at the same time." is hard to understand. Can anyone make it easier to read? Thanks.
