translation

Hello. I am not a native speaker and I got in an argument with my teacher today regarding a translation from romanian to english .

My version of the translation was "She told me five days have passed since she arrived at the ..(bla bla bla not important) "

My teacher told me that this is incorrect and the correct version is "She told me it has been five days since she arrived at the ...(bla bla bla not important)

Is anything wrong with my version ? I mean don't both sentences say exactly the same thing?

(bla bla bla not This versoin isn't really grammatically wrong, but it is idiomatically and semantically awkward. (bla bla bla not important Your teacher was correct. "
