translation

Tiny blue butterflies flitted about, and here and there, with its exquisitely painted wings expanded, lay one of a larger kind, like some rich blossom clustered amongst the leaves.

Q) I don't understand the structure in the underlined part; plus the meaning of "lay". Is it used as the past verb of "lie"?

Top answer

Most of the butterflies were small pure blue ones. Thus, when a larger and multicolored one appeared among them, it really stood out, like a bright flower does when it is among leaves. The small blue ones were mostly flying about.

  • The larger multicolored ones were resting (lying - "lay [past tense of lie] one of a larger kind"), not flying, which is what made them stand out so much - they would not have stood out like this if they were flying among the small blues ones.

Thank you for your answer.
But i still can't understand the underlined part.
Is it inverted or something? How is it connected to the previous part of the sentence?

Tiny blue butterflies flitted about, and here and there - with colorful wings extended, as butterflies do when they rest - lay one butterfly of a larger kind than the small blue ones (there were a number of these larger butterflies lying about: here lay a larger butterfly, there lay another one, there lay another, etc.). These larger butterflies where not blue like the small ones, but rather, mu
