I am not asking questions with the purpose of knowing about religion in this forum at all.
I just can't understand this sentence.
When I see a sentence with "in", I think about inside, or situations as shown in dictionary, and I had a hard time understanding this sentence with in. Just want to know what this sentence means first. Could you clarify for me?

This turns out to be a very interesting question. I had no trouble understanding the meaning but trying to find a quote from a dictionary proved harder that I expected. I finally found this: during the course of
The "new era" is entered into "during the course of" the development of Yahwistic faith."

Saying "in developing Yahwistic faith" conveys the wrong meaning, it implies that the development is under human control, which of course it is not.
Saying "in the development of..." implies that the development is proceeding without human intervention.

'in' in this sentence also means " in the course of(during?)?
but it makes no sense to me with 'during'
Does it simply mean 'I got home late'?

Is 'in an effort' interchangeable with 'in making an effort' in the sentence above?

Can't I just say Joshua's retaking part of the promised land without 'of' without the before 'retaking'?

I am confused with when i should use it or not. Is there some kind of formula?
