Transitive Verb Tell

that entry illustrates the use of "tell of"

Does that make an object between tell and about compulsory (your opinion)? We are discussing transitivity of tell. And there's no difference between of or about here, that is, either of them can replace the other. In the image attached, you can see that tell of something or tell about something has always been in use. Yes, 2011 is contemporary English.
