I had thought that only action verbs which make for the transition of action are transitive verbs.

Please tell me if this statement is correct.
A verb is said to be transitive if it has a direct object irrespective of the action being transferred

You are confusing two separate concepts:

dynamic/static (stative)
transitive / intransitive

All combinations occur:

Transitive/stative
I own a car.

Intransitive / stative
I am a woman.
