transitive verb

Although the practice of catching and selling them as stuffed tarsiers to tourists has been stopped, the species is still threatened by destroying of its natural forest habitat.

Q) I destroyed it. The verb destroy is followed by an object without a preposition insertion.

Why the underlined part is not like this "destorying its natural forest habitat"? If this structure can occur what's the difference between the two?
