Transitive or Intransitive?

"I am sleeping on the bed."

Is "sleeping" a transitive or transitive verb here? Can we really call "bed" as an object. For example, in "I am eating an apple", I can say that "apple" is an object. But what about bed inthe first sentence?

The verb is intransitive in 'I am sleeping on the bed'.

The sentence is unnatural without further context - If you are sleeping, then you won't say anything. It is fine if you are describing a picture of yourself, or saying what you are doing later.

Why is there no object? Why is bed not an object?

There is a preposition before it.
Cf. I am buying a bed.
There is an object now, a bed.

So, what is the part of speech of "bed" if it comes after a preposition? And why should it be not considered an object if it comes after a preposition?

It is the 'object' of the preposition, not of the verb.
