Transitions First, Second, Third, Etc.

What do you think of replacing the transitions

First, ...

Second, ...

Third,...

with

The first thing, ...

The second thing, ...

The third thing, ...

My feeling is that "The first thing, ..." etc. is characteristic of spoken English rather than written English.

Those are adverbs. Your "things" are nouns. They can't work. Besides, "thing" should be avoided in formal writing, and such enumerations are not seen in informal writing.

You can use "first of all" in informal English.

"the first thing..." might be used for emphasis in a complaint, diatribe or tirade.. Not in an ordinary pleasant conversation.
