My transformation we should ouse rather here as indicated in the instructions to the exercise:

I woudl rather go skating than cycling.

That is an unhappy mixture of grammars.

I would rather skate than cycle.

But in the example in the coursebook it is indicated that I should use rather and the end of the sentence I cannot change and it is:
The original sentence is : I prefer skating to cycling. and below the sentence to be transformed..

I .............................................. than cycling

Then use 'go', but it is not a strict transformation, then.
