Train of thought

Hi,

How do you describe the way your throughts develop and progress?

Let’s say that you’re trying to solve an equation and your teacher wants you to tell him how the idea to solve it shaped up in your head?

Could I use ‘train of thought’ in that case? How would I phrase it?

“Could you tell me how your train of thought ....blah blah?”

Thank you.
