'traditional' birthplace - meaning

Hi all

What does the word 'traditional' mean here? I couldn't find an obvious meaning from the dictionary that would fit with this sentence.

It said the traditional birthplace of Jesus Christ was hemmed in by Israeli settlements and military zones as well as Israel's West Bank barrier. (BBC)

Thank you
