Track, line

What do you call a pair of railroad tracks, as on a metro? Do you say line?

I was deceived by NYC's claim that it has 600 miles of track. They mean a system length of only 300 miles. But a phrase like 300 miles of lines is not very clear either, because line has dozens of meanings in English. You need a lot of context before the desired meaning becomes evident.

I would have thought that you had already made your own decision on the proper term to use. 600 miles of track = a system length of 600 miles.

So what are you calling "system length"? The total track length or the total route length?
