What's the difference between toward and towards? I mean any difference, be it register, frequency, formality, or any other such thing.

"Toward" is US English, and "towards" is UK. That is not a fast rule at all, though. Most people don't bother to make such fine distinctions, and both versions are perfectly understood and cause no problems.
