Tower end of the church

Hi

The font stood at the tower end of the church ....

Does it mean that the font was where the tower ended in the church?

Very good question. No, it means that the font is located at the same part of the church where the towers are to be found. The baptismal font in a church is often found on the ground floor just beneath where the towers rise.

So it means that the font stood somewhere close to the tower?

The font is always somewhere inside of the church and, in this instance, I would say that it means that the font stood beneath the tower or that the tower was nearby.

Here's a link to Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. If I remember correctly, the font is located on the ground floor of the left tower.
