The car is heading toward/s north.

So, with or without s? When do we use toward? And how bout towards?

towards (also toward, especially in AmE)

Hi,

The car is heading toward/s north.

We don't normally use 'toward/s' with compass-style directions, so just say The car is heading north.

This is from a text I used in college called Simon & Schuster Handbook for Writers (Second Edition):

"toward, towards are both acceptable, although some writers perfer toward."

I agree with Clive--you would not say, "I am heading toward/s north." You would just say, "I'm heading north."
