"Toward" or "towards"

I constantly confuse over these two different usages of the word.
For example,
WHY is it necessary to use "towards" instead of "toward"
in sentences such as "The river fell in a series of cascades down towards the lake"?
Is it because there's already a verb collocated ahead of "down towards"?

Top answer

"Toward" is American, and "towards" is British. That is not a strict rule, and there is no other difference.
