"Toward" or "towards"

He shuffled over sluggishly toward (or towards) the door.

Which is the correct form? Or are they the same? If they're not, in which instances should I use one or the other?

Thanks.

They're both the same. People use both interchangably. Although "toward" sounds better to me out loud as a native speaker of American English.
