Toward or towards

Hi all

I am a bit in doubt about whether to use toward or towards in the following sentences:

"This is a rather harsh comparison which clearly shows his attitude toward/towards the prison guards and authorities."

Can anybody tell me whether to use toward or towards in these two sentences? What is the difference between the two? What rules apply to toward/towards?

Thanks!

As far as I know both are correct. The only thing is that one form is more common in the British English and the other in the American. If I'm not wrong the British tendency leans toward "toward", and the American towards "towards".

Instead, however, it occurred to me that when it comes to choosing between "towards" and "toward" .us sites appear to show a preference for the preposition "toward" when the resulting adverbial phrase is used with a verb.
