Touch base

Can someone explain what " We need to touch base" means? An example would be appreciated. Thanks.

it just means to check with each other, or to get a "reality check" it is idiomatic, used in some business circles, it may be derived from US football or the idea of a "base" camp on an expedition, I dont know - that bit's just guessing!
