Total, and singular vs plural

I'm having a debate about this at work. Which of these sentences is correct?

There is a total of 10 guests selected.

There are a total of 10 guests selected.

There IS a total of 10 guests selected because total is singular. It's like saying - There IS a bar with many people in it just down the road.

What about " there are two cars and a bike" and " there is a bike and two cars? Are they both correct?
