toroidal v. annular

When describing a circular-shaped portion (like that of a frisbee) on the surface of a disc object, is toroidal the same as annular? I encountered a text where the phrase "... toroidal, or annular,..." kept coming up, making me wondering they are different, which they should mean the same, but making the translation into a non-alphabet language of the phrase very difficult.
