Topic: “Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extend do you agree or disagree?”

For recent years, we have seen an outstanding rise in gender equality. Women have been given more opportunities to develop their potential than ever before. And so as to boost this tendency, some people propose that there should be equal proportion of each gender in every subject at universities. Although I appreciate this proposal, I am inclined to the opponent view for some following reasons.

Firstly, I must stipulate that keeping the number of female students level with the number of the other in every subject is completely impractical. Due to sexual characteristics and even traditionally social prejudice, there is an evident difference between men and women in choosing what courses they will enroll on. For example, the occupations such as mechanic engineering or astronaut usually appeal to males rather than females as a result of physical requirements. On the contrary, the occupations like kindergarten and primary teachers or nurse are more popular with women. As a consequence, it is very difficult to fill these courses if a half of places needed to go to males.

Secondly, it is obvious that admission to university courses should be based on candidate’s qualifications rather than on sex. In this way, both male and female can be in a level playing field and applicants will take great pains to obtain good grades in study. So, if a female student with the best qualifications which fit her perfectly for a place on a course is rejected in favor of a male student with fewer qualifications, it will surely unacceptable or vice versa.

From what has been stated above, I conclude that gender is not a reasonable base to consider applicants owing to its unreality and inequity. Therefore, I strongly suppose that universities select their students on the basis of merit instead of sex.
